Here are some common symptoms of Water Heater failure:

  • No Hot Water: The most obvious sign is when you turn on the hot water tap and only cold water comes out.
  • Inconsistent Water Temperature: If the water temperature fluctuates while you're showering or using hot water, it could indicate a problem.
  • Discolored Water: Rusty or discolored water can be a sign of corrosion inside the tank.
  • Unusual Noises: Popping, rumbling, or banging sounds coming from the water heater can indicate sediment buildup or other issues.
  • Leaking: Any water around the base of the heater is a sign of a potential leak.
  • Low Water Pressure: Reduced water flow can be caused by sediment buildup or a failing heating element.
  • Age of the Unit: If your water heater is over 10 years old, it might be nearing the end of its lifecycle.

Tips/Troubleshooting

While the actual repair or replacement of a Water Heater should be left to the professionals at Alliance Plumbing, there are several things you can do right away to get the problem under control before a Technician arrives.

  • 1 Find the Leak
There are several places the leak could be on your water heater:
    • A leak in the pipes that connect to the water heater
    • A leaking valve on the top of the water heater
    • A leaking valve on the bottom of the water heater
    • A leak at the bottom of the tank
  • 2 Shut Off the Water Heater
To prevent the leak from getting worse, shut off the water heater. For gas water heaters, there should be an On/Off switch on the water heater itself. For an electric water heater, you'll turn off the power through the circuit breaker. After shutting off the power to the water heater, you also need to shut off the water leads that go into the water heater. To do this, you'll have to find the valve above or to the side of the water heater and turn clockwise.
  • 3 Drain the Tank
Draining the tank can stop any additional leaking. To do this, attach a hose to the drain valve and empty the water into a sump pump or floor drain.
